Baumgarten’s further explication of looks (quoted by Guyer) as “the idea of the liberal arts, the doctrine of second-rate cognition, the artwork of beautifully considering, the art of the analogue of reason” does not help much.
It seems just like a mish-mash of different ideas. The theory of the liberal arts might involve debates over what the liberal arts might be just. How the creative arts give a form of cognition inferior to, why don’t we assume, the sciences, is a sad thought, if true. If there is an art of considering attractively it might happen in art, religion, science, beliefs, or everyday life.

So why just relate it with the liberal arts? You can think beautiful thoughts about all sorts of things, although I am not clear what a beautiful thought is. And what is the analogue of reason exactly? As usual, I find myself wishing I had formed a good English translation of the whole text, or that I could read it in German.
Guyer himself will not try to explicate this, but merely uses the quote to infer that Baumgarten had not been a cognitivist however, many types of pluralist. A fascinating feature of Guyer’s strategy is that the guy can lump very diverse figures in looks under what he calls cognitivism. The thing of visual cognition for Wolff is perfection, for Hegel soul, for Schopenhauer the Platonic Ideas, for Heidegger “Being,” as well as for Lukacs capitalism.
